Statement Of Intent
My chosen theme for my GCSE Level photography exam is: 'Lights and colour'.I have chosen to study this theme because i just find it so fascinating when lights shine in a picture,it makes it seem magical and it sets a whole new vibe.
In order to produce a successful ,creative and unique final piece,I have to carry out some research on my chosen theme 'Lights And Colour'.I will research artists who mainly focus on colour since i dont want to do much research on lights. This is because I must learn good colour combinations to make my picture stand out.I have decided to research Magdiel Lopez. This is because their work has a lot of colour in it and their combinations are extremley creative.I love it and would really like to include it into my own work which is why I have decided to research them I can incorporate some of their ideas into my own work and make it spectacular.
I intend to have a few photoshoots to explore my chosen theme. They may not go to plan,I will probably end up making some changes to what I plan to do however I am confident that whatever I come up with will be amazing just the way it is.Im sure that my photoshoots will most likely be in school since i dopnt have a camera at home and im usually very busy however ill try my best to make my pictures the way i plan them to be
I intend to research Magdiel Lopez as I have mentioned before because of the colour in their work.I will also be looking at different pictures of lights, not my a photographer but just google images because I dont need that much work on the 'Lights' part of my theme.
Throughout this project,I will be using m,any different techniques with my camera such as different modes like ISO,Exposure and Aperture.I will be using different levels of each making a dark pcture and a bright one so my work looks a little bit different.I will also be experimenting by doing a half cut face on a picture and fill it with flowers as that is one goal I would love to achieve on this project.I will do this by following a tutorial on youtube and hopefully I get a good few final outcomes.I have decided all my final outcomes will be based around a half cut face but wont entirely be the same.
In this project,I hope to learn more about different colour combinations so i can use that i my future work without needing any help.I also hope to learn how to do a half cut face by heart, without watching tutorials so that Im very well experienced with it and can do it on any other picture in the future.
I see my final format being a picture with a few lights in it,It could be fairy lights, coloured lights etc.Just with ligfhts and a touch of colour in it. Perhaps rainbow or red and gold,it deoends on the picture i take in my upcoming photoshoots.

Neon lights
I have chosen all these images because I think they are effective as they all have a lot of color .A key trend is that all colors used are nice neon colors which is what really helps the picture stand out due to how bright it is.this may inspire me to do my work similar to this since I love the way the colors look with a human face .
Black&White
I have chosen these pictures because l think that they are very effective since it has a very nice contrast between black and white. The good thing is that the black ad white makes the peoples faces stand out, this is what has inspired to me to consider making my work like this.
Ghostly
I have chosen these images because I think that they are very effective since there's is more than one face but it has a "ghostly" effect.the good thing is that the effect makes the picture stand out a lot more and the different colors also make the picture look a lot more attractive. This effect makes me want to include images like these in my own work.
Colour Cloud
I have chosen these images because they all have a vibrant color cloud which really makes the picture eye-catching.The good thing is that the colors make the people stand out.I really like this and I would love to have something similar in my own work.

Dorothea Lange
Composition:
This is a women with 3 children. The womens in the middle, shes holding a baby and has a child on each side of her.Her facial expressions tell us that shes upset/worried.We can infer that shes poor and is worried about not having enough money to raise her kids and live a healthy life.It is in black and white which sets a very depressing/gloomy mood. Her right eye and her arm is a sweet spot. This makes us feel sympathy for her because shes poor and shes struggling in life. The leading line is diagnle from the top right down to middle left. This makes me feel sorry for this women and her kids and it makes me realise that I shouldnt take things that god has blessed me with for granted. The dirt on the kids, the women and that old dirty clothes also imply that they are poor and they cant afford a lot.I would like to use something like this in my own work because it will bring some realistic vibes and it will remind people how lucky they are for what they have and that they should be thankful. The lighting in my opinion is set as normal daylight ISO around 200.

Structure:
This is a old picture since there arent many poor people on the streets anymore, the black and white also suggest that its an old picture.I think this picture was taken California because back then ,around the 19th century, people were living in poverty and they didnt have enough money to spend on food, water,
clothes etc .Its been taken by a camera with no colour since there wasnt any colour back then.Theres structure is in the background however the photographer(Dorothea Lange),made the women and her kids the main focus of the picture. The background isnt that clear, but from my point of view,It is a plain wall and the women and her kids are leaning on it.In my opinion,I find this image a very sad and depressing picture because it shows a women suffering.

Connection:
The theme is what life was like during the 19th Century to show everyone how miserable peoples lives were. This isn't relevant to my work since mine is all about colours and happy thought however it is relevant since I also have a sad, gloomy mood in my images .This image can link to my work since some of my images are also in black and white and they also show unhappiness. In my opinion,I think that there is a message behind this image to show all the ungrateful, spoilt people to be happy and feel blessed for everything they have since there are people who cant afford something that rich people can buy every single day.Another message could be that you should learn to help others and be grateful that you have the ability to do so.I think that its a black and white image to show that it was taken a long time ago,I would do this in my project just because I would also like to send a message out I my work.

Context:
In early March, 1936, Dorothea Lange drove past a sign reading, “PEA-PICKERS CAMP,” in Nipomo, California. At the time, she was working as a photographer for the Resettlement Administration (RA), a Depression-era government agency formed to raise public awareness of and provide aid to struggling farmers. Twenty miles down the road, Lange reconsidered and turned back to the camp, where she encountered a mother and her children. “I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet,” she later recalled. “She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding field and birds that the children killed.” Lange took seven exposures of the woman, 32-year-old Florence Owens Thompson, with various combinations of her seven children. One of these exposures, with its tight focus on Thompson’s face, transformed her into a Madonna-like figure and became an icon of the Great Depression and one of the most famous photographs in history. This image was first exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in 1940, under the title Pea Picker Family, California; by 1966, when the Museum held a retrospective of Lange’s work, it had acquired its current title, Migrant Mother, Nipomo California.

Magdiel Lopez
Magdiel Lopez was born in Havana,Cuba. He spent his childhood surrounded by beautiful bright coloured culture. You can see the culture of colour in his work today. As He got older,Lopez moved to the United States at fifteen where he carried on working on his skills for the next ten years privately.Lopez decided to reveal his work in a series called 'A Poster A Day'.Lopez released on piece of artwork everyday for 365 days .Each day he gained a better audience which lead him to be featured by The New York Times,Cosmopolitan,Entrepreneur, and Awards.Lopez has worked for many brands such as Apple,Nike,Absolute vodka,MTV,Warner Brothers, etc, and currently has a partnership with Adobe as a design mentor and creative.
In this image,i can see that there is a strong line in the middle which brings the two colours of orange and mint blue together ,its creates a beautiful horizon for the background.Rule of thirds have been used, the womens face is right in the middle which makes is stand out especially because theirs lighter colours in the back.Use of photoshop to enhance the image,a tool that may have been used was the 'Pen Tool'.Studio set up initially of her side profile and then modelled make up and hair. Its a very clear image which has been taken using shutter speed so it becomes easier to edit in photoshop.Probably a lighting set up to highlight parts of the models face.
In this image,i can see the profile of a womens face which then has a mountain and a horizon in the back.In my opinion i think these images has a Japanese styler since pastel colours have been used ,it also has a graphic effect.Lopez's photoshop images are a little bit minimal in content with a graphic element but also a simple styler which makes them stand out because of the combination of 2 styles.I admire the change in colour in the background, the way it fades from a pink to an orange which turns into a mint green that then fades off t a peach colour. This image makes me think about warm beaches and nice relaxing views because you normally see a horizon when your looking at a view from high up somwhere.
This relates to my own work because im going to have a nice cut out in the face with a nice faded colour in the back.I wil be using similar colours because it really is eye catching to lots of people.I will follow a tutorial on how to cut out a face but i already know how to do most of it anyways so i wont be needing much help.I will also be using the pen tool and more tools that i may have never used in the past since i have never done a colour faded background.I might be using other posters and magazines to help give me more ideas to make my picture better.I genuinly really like Lopez's work because he has this effec t of pastel colours and i love pastel colours therefore i will also be using those in my work,Lopez really is a good inspiration to using more colours and trying new effects.

My Plan For My Own Picture:
I am going to re-create this picture because first of all,I adore the neon lights,i really think it brings life into the picture and the dark, black background really help the lights stand out.I also love the way the lights reflect onto the floor ,it creates a very nice blur.I find it impressive how the girl is lying on the floor however the photographer has turned the camera to make it look like shes stood against the wall.I will also get my model wearing a plain outfit with her hair looking a bit loose and free, then i will wrap her around some fairy lights, they may not be neon but probably gold.then i will get my model to lay down on a shiny, clean floor so i cant turn my camera and take a picture.
My model is going to be a friend of mine because she has a short body so it will be easier to get her in the shot,it will also give a very comfy vibe with lights around a short body. She also has brown hair and the golden lights all around her will really make the picture eye-catching as the golden will stand out infront of the brown. My model will be wearing a short plane top and black leggings, something very plane so everyone's attention is drawn to the lights and not my model.I will have her laying down on the floor and then i will put some nice fairy lights around and on top of her but more on the floor so we have a nice reflection.

- Me and my model are hoping to do this some point after school so that we dont need to worry about wasting time.
- I am hoping to take at least 20-30 pictures so I can see which one is the best and to also see how my photography skills have improved through a bunch of photos.
- I will experiment with my white balance just to see which one would make it look a lot more attractive
Equipment
The equipment I am going to use is a canon DSLR camera. My white balance will be auto,My ISO will be about auto/100,I will decrease my exposure a little bit so I have a nice black background and so its not too bright.I will need a nice polished floor so the fairy lights can reflect on it.In my head I am thinking of using the dance studio since it has a nice polished floor.I will be using fairy lights, golden ones, because I don't my work to be the exact same as this photographers work.l will delete all unnecessary photos off my camera so I have enough memory to take more pictures.I will also be using a tripod so i can get some nice angles and shots.

Lighting
This is how I will be setting up the lighting when I take my picture
I may not use this depending on the natural lighting that will be present.
A darker tone will make a good effect in the picture since it will be easier for the fairy lights to stand out.

Props
I will be using fairy lights as a prop because in the main picture that i am deciding to remake,it uses fairy lights
I have decided to use golden lights and not multi coloured lights because i don't want the pictures to be the exact same
The lights play a big part in the picture since the reflection on the floor will be very eye-catching to people.
Location
The location will be a dance studio.( the schools )
This is because it has a nice polished floor which will make it easier for the fairy lights to reflect on.
It is also a wide, open space and in the original picture the location seems to be very empty, therefore i decided to do a dance studio so it will make it easier for my picture to have a very open-spaced,empty vibe.

Mock Exam
I can see a young girl with ocean blue crystal eyes with a hint of green in them.I can also see her straight ginger hair. There are blurred purple flowers
up at the top of the picture leaving a clear shadow of the flower on her cheek. Her eyebrows and her eye lashes are very faint leaving her blue
eye to stand out which makes the picture look alot more effective since its a different colour and is very bright. Her cheeks also have freckles all over. Her mouth is a little open as well revealing her teeth. There isnt really a foreground in this picture because when you first look at it you see everything straight away theres nothing at a further distance however there is a little bit of a foreground at the top of the picture with the blurred flowers because you can tell the girl is stood behind the flowers yet the attention still goes straight to the girl and not to the flowers above so I wouldnt really call this a foreground. There arent any leading lines in this photograph as everything is very zoomed in and its
all at one level. The photographer has used the rule of thirds because they have taken a picture of half the girls face leaving her eye right in the middle and at a very good sweet spot because it draws everyone attention to her eyes making the picture look alot more attracting and eye catching. In my
opinion,I think that the photographer took this picture with an apeture of F5 because as you can see,the flowers at the top are very blurred however the face of the young girl is all very focused causing the picture to look more effective and dramatic. In my opinion,I also feel like the photographer had his ISO set at around 400 because its not a very dark image however its not too bright either yet there are parts of the girls face where theres a few light spots such as her lips, you can see them slightly shining. This makes the picture look alot more brighter but not too bright
making it more eye catching to other people and it makes it look more alive because its not too dark and you can see everything perfectly well in this.I also think the photographer had their white balance on auto because the picture seems very natural and unfiltered, perhaps the photographer has done this so everything isnt really the same colour, leaving the blue eyes and orange hair to stand out as it helps attracting more people to the picture. This photograph has not been overexposed,in fact its just perfect because you can tell the light is shining right at the girls face however its not too bright and is extremley clear to see.I think that the photographer used a tripod because the image is extremely focused implying that the camera was absolutley still which is what makes me believe the photographer may have used a tripod.I feel like the photograph has been edited in photoshop by using either the levels or brightness tool to make the face seem abit more brighter but not too much, only edited slightly as there are parts of her face highlighted in some light such as her lips and nose bridge. The main colours in the image are blue, orange and purple. The three bright colours on a pale face really blends everything together and exaggerates the picture leaving it to be alot more noticeable because it really makes it stand out especially the blue eye since its sat right on a sweet spot. There arent any patterns in the image its all really just a face however the freckles on her cheek do leave some sort of pattern as there are alot of them but nothing too intense. The image has cropped
the other half of the girls face,it begins from half of her nose bridge and goes down to the rest of right side of her face. There arent any objects in the picture however the blurred flowers at the top does improve the picture because even though its blurred, the purple stands out with the orange hair
and the pale skin. Its also a cold colour like her blue eye which is why it looks good together and
becomes very outstanding. I really like their work because its just a normal girls face in the sunshine with some flowers abover her eyes, its so simple theres no need to go somewhere extremley far with a nice view just to take good pictures - the photographer emphasises how you can take amazing pictures just in you garden or local park which is absolutley inspiring and its something I really admire. The girls hair which is ginger and the flowers and eye which are purple and blue are very well blended together.I find this very fascinating because two cold colours have been blended with ginger which is a hot colour however it fits so perfectly well, the photographer managed to pull this off without the picture looking odd since its a group of colours that arent from the same group.Their work links to my work by the flowers and the zoomed in effect,I really love to take close up pictures of things as I find it more effective and realistic and thats what the photograopher has done with the young girls face especially her eye.The good things about this picture is the focus of the camera is brilliant and the choice of adding a purple flower to mix well with the blue eye and ginger hair really makes the picture outstanding because its alot more effective. It really does catch my eye and I have fallen in love with the picture and the choice of colour.I also really admire how the flowers at the top are blurred,it really highlights the girls face and draws all the attention onto her eye which is actually a very clever thing to do.What could be better is if her ginger hair was a little bit more visible in the picture as you cant really see it as much as the purple and the blue,if the ginger was more visible this picture would be alot more incredible than what it already is.I am thrilled to have found this image because it has genuinly really inspired me to take pictures like this but to really pay attention to who im going to be using as my model because in this picture I can instantly tell that the photographer didnt just pick anyone they could find, they actually thought about
who they were going to use and the ginger hair with blue eyes really emphasises that.I want my outcomes to turn out similar to this image but of course with my own talent in it,I dont want to copy everything for exactly how it is then it would just be boring therefore I will have a different colour
mix.I can use this image to help me inspire my own outcomes as it has really opened my eyes to how amazing a colour mix looks and that it gets boring having a picture all the same colour. The colour mix really makes the picture seem like its full of life and it sets a cheerful and excited atmosphere.

First Photo Shoot
Best And Worst Images
As a photographer,In my opinion,I feel that this is the best picture because the composition is all levelled and the camera was very focused as the picture was taken.I also feel that this image is the best because it has a very dark background so the fairy-lights that my models holding really stands out.I have done this because the brightness of the lights with a dark background really catches the attention of the naked eye.

As a photographer,I believe that this is the worst picture I have taken the background is pitch black and there is no light of source anywhere.I also feel like this image is the worst because the camera is out of focus .You can clearly see the camera is "shaky" by the huge blur on my models face. This is a bad thing because no source of light, blurry face gives you a very dull and gloomy vibe which will not catch peoples eyes and nobodies attention will be drawn to it.

Second Photo Shoot
Best And Worst Images
This is my best image ,even though the focus isn't the best ,its better than any other picture I have taken in my second photoshoot.I also really like this image because the rainbow strip going diagonally across my models face, really stands out and makes my photo unique, comparing to most pictures of a human face.
|
This is my worst image, this is because its out of focus which tuns away everyones attention from it.I also don't really like this image because the photo was taken while my model wasn't ready. The lighting isn't even either which makes my models face look a bit weird and messed up.

Third Photo Shoot
Best And Worst Images
This is my best image because the camera was very well focused and my model was ready for the picture to be taken. The lights also look very nice in my models hair, they catch peoples attention.

This is my worst image because the camera was not focused which caused a huge blur in my models face.My model was also not ready for her picture to be taken.

Final Outcomes
Evaluation
My main project theme was portrait, however I went into doing a mixture of things such as book covers, movie posters and posters of support. The set of pictures that I have all have a theme of imagination since nobody in the real world has flowers cut through their face.I really enjoyed it because it was something different and interesting to do.
The most enjoyable part of the project was photoshop and modelling. This is because I learnt lots of new things on photoshop to make my images even more interesting. I also really enjoyed being a model for my friend because it was fun having my picture taken, however it was a bit challenging because I had to stay very still and try not to blink when the flash came from the camera as my photo was being taken.
A few new techniques I have experienced in photoshop has to be the pen tool since that's one of the main tools needed to complete the cut from the face.Another tool that I really enjoyed using was the magic wand tool. This was very necessary and needed for when I had to get the flowers onto the picture however they had a background so I had to erase it by using the magic wand tool.
I need to develop how to set up a photo-shoot because even though I have had many shoots,I still haven't really understood how to set it up.I also need to improve my photoshop skills by learning new things since I don't want to be doing the same thing for each image,I would like to learn something different therefore I will need to improve my skills.
I researched a photographer who had done the same thing as I did with his pictures.I followed his step by step tutorial which was difficult the first time I have done it but then I kept trying and had an amazing outcome.Another photographer I have researched was Dorothea Lange.I had explored different parts of a photo that I didn't even know and it helped me improve my learning and knowledge.
The photographer really has influenced my work because it helped turn a boring picture into something a lot more exciting, imaginative and more developed. It also did show off a theme of imagination and mystic creatures.
The technique I enjoyed the most was photo-shop since it made me explore different ways I could have my final image. It also set a very good theme and the difference it has from the original picture makes it so much more interesting to look at.
The most successful part of my project has to be the photo-shoot because if I didn't have good images,I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I have. Another successful part of my project has to be photoshop since it really helped develop my work and I'm really proud of the final outcome.
I encountered a few problems while I was editing my first image on photoshop. This was when I was following a tutorial for the first time but then when I had noticed I had gone wrong somewhere,I decided to go back a few steps and fix my mistakes.I had eventually sorted out the problem and no problems occurred for the rest of the images I have edited.
I have learned from my mistakes by replaying the video and going back a few steps from my actual work. The problem was that I didn't press the button I was supposed to press,I very minor mistake but it was sorted and my picture came out great.
If I was given the chance to do this project again,I would focus on making my images into something that people notice a lot more these days. This is because not many people pay attention to books, movie posters or even posters that support things which is why next time I will turn it into a vogue magazine or something that people pay more attention to.
